I create hand tufted volcanic art that holds space for contradictions. Working near Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, I combine hard volcanic imagery with soft upcycled textiles. An honoring of cotton and rock, destruction and creation, bold and tender.
My process is slow and devotional. I use a vintage manual tufting tool from the 1970s, letting each piece emerge over weeks rather than hours, with upcycled textiles I dye and process in my off grid studio. This slow creative process allows me to go deeper, notice more, honor the dualities that fascinate me.
In a time that feels more divisive than ever, I want my role as an artist to hold space for both. Two truths can coexist. Opposing forces can be equally valid. My work explores this tension. Not to resolve it, but to celebrate it.
Each piece is named with a single word: Bloom, Listen, Grace, Bold. These words are seeds that guide the work to bloom, rooting the volcanic landscapes in something human, tender, and close.
